A Free Press: Can you keep a secret?

Over the past few weeks all the press seem to have been talking about is what they’re not allowed to talk about. The hot topic in newspapers and on news items turned into somewhat of a guessing game for the general public after editors and broadcasters had to navigate the minefield of the Celebrity Super-Injunction.

Best explained a ‘Celebrity Super Injunction’ is effectively a gagging order, which legally prevents the media from reporting the details of a certain story pertaining to that celebrity’s private life, and what’s more, further prevents the media from acknowledging the injunction exists in the first place. Or put more simply, a violation of free speech? You bet’cha.

Trying to take Super Injunctions one step further and curb press freedom a little bit more is ex Formula 1 boss Max Mosley. If Mosley had his way the media would be bound by law to inform public figures well in advance of a story breaking about their private lives giving them an opportunity to seek a Super Injunction preventing the story ever seeing the light. In effect, forcing the press to gag itself. WTF? Thankfully this campaign has so far been rejected.

Max Mosley lost privacy bid.

I fully appreciate the UK privacy law which states that everyone has a right to a private and family life but celebrities, have to some degree, surrendered this right when choosing their career. Nobody forced these people into the public eye, it was a conscious choice that they themselves made. If they believe that surrendering their privacy is too higher price to pay they can always fade into obscurity and get a normal 9 to 5. But that’s not likely is it? Because they want to enjoy the privileges but they don’t want to ride the waves. You can’t have it all ways (although they like to think they can.)

Correct me if I’m wrong but in recognising the right to privacy you also have to recognise the right to freedom of speech and expression. What’s more, this country is supposed to enjoy the advantages of a free press that is unencumbered by censorship restrictions.

Nowadays however it would appear that if you are rich enough and famous enough there is nothing your money can’t buy including the silence of the British press and the compliance of the justice system. If celebrities are believed to be above the law it’s probably because they usually are. If £50,000 is nothing more than spare change you can carry the law around in your back pocket, for less fortunate mere mortals you have to put up, shut up and face the music. Sound fair to you?

Super Injunctions have come to the forefront of press attention after a recent spate of celebrities said to include TV personalities, actors, footballers, broadcasters etc have scrambled for an injunction to protect their various indiscretions. In the middle of one such media shitstorm is ex Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas, who in her own words, has been “thrown to the lions” after her six month affair with a married premier league footballer was exposed. While you can undoubtedly question the morals of this young woman in carrying out an affair with a married man the blame doesn’t lie solely at her feet. In fact she is only responsible for the minority of the blame. You see, in my opinion, while what she did was naively stupid she herself had no ties, she was a free agent. To carry out the affair she didn’t have to lie to her family and crap all over the institution of marriage. The responsibility for that lies at his feet. And when the affair came out in the open (as all dirty little secrets have a habit of doing) he, like a coward, paid for a court order banning the media from revealing his identity while she was left alone to face a media onslaught and public humiliation. The injunction was said to have been put in place to ‘protect his family’ but I cant help believe he would have been better served in protecting his family if he had kept his hands to himself and his you know what in his trousers.

Imogen Thomas

However thanks to a Twitter campaign devoted to revealing the names of certain celebs hiding behind super injunctions and a politician blurting out his name under the protection of parliamentary privilege the love rat was exposed, proving that where there’s a will there’s a way.

Now I’m probably opening a can of worms here and going slightly off topic but the other day I saw a debate on ITV’s This Morning (where they were discussing Super Injunctions and the case of Imogen Thomas) that got me all wound up. The wife of a footballer who had cheated in the past was berating the wannabe WAG’s who make it their mission to carry out affairs with married footballers. The footballers wife was lashing into these women claiming they have the morals of an ally cat and to some extent I agree. But what of the wife’s role in all this? Surely it’s a bit of the pot calling the kettle black? Now before you all jump on me for suggesting that poor unsuspecting wives are to blame for their husband’s dirty behaviour I would ask you to read on, as I’m clearly not suggesting any such thing. Alls I’m saying is those WAG’s who choose to stand by their man, and ignore their infidelity and indiscretions while being publicly humiliated don’t really have a platform to preach from do they? They choose to keep the money and the lifestyle rather than walk away with their head held high and their dignity and self-respect in tact.  So what of their morals? It takes two to tango.

So why do people care? And why is it so important for the media to be able to report on such matters? Simple. Public interest. The public put these people in their privileged positions. These celebs are laughing all the way to the bank with money that YOU have spent on match/show/film/concert tickets, merchandise, music, books, fashion lines, etc So if they are selling a false image you can bet your ass it’s within the public interest to know about it.

What makes me laugh is the blatant stupidity and arrogance of these celebrities. They think that if they have enough money they can do what or whom they like and keep it hushed up. But these things will always come back and bite you on the arse. Give someone enough rope and they will hang themselves. If these celebrities behaved themselves they wouldn’t have anything to worry about and the press wouldn’t have a story. In this day and age a secret is never a secret for long especially if you’re in the public eye. You’d have thought they’d have learnt this by now. The things that people want kept in the dark always have a way of finding the light eventually, and I for one support the press’ role in helping stories within the public interest to find the light.

If the story can be proven to be true and the facts are correct then why shouldn’t it be reported? Who has the right to curb free speech? As a journalist I’m proud to say that this country operates a free press. The only worry is, for how long?

Public figure or Public nuisance?

What the HELL is wrong with celebrities these days? They are so far off the tracks I think it would be more accurate to change their job title to ‘full time professional train wrecks’. So far off the rails in fact that I doubt whether they were actually ever on them in the first place.

I make this observation following the latest celebrity meltdown. She once sang about a genie in a bottle but it now appears the genie herself, Christina Aguilera has HIT the bottle if recent reports are to be believed.

In the past few weeks stories have been emerging, which claim that Ms Aguilera’s family and friends have been urging the star to curb her drinking and partying lifestyle. They have reportedly asked her to check herself into rehab to help clean up her act. This sad situation comes after a media shitstorm, which documented the singer filing for divorce from husband Jordan Bratman, piling on the pounds, getting herself a new boy toy and acting inappropriately in public. All this in the space of a few months. Move over LiLo.

However the latest development in Christina’s crazy life came in the early hours of Tuesday morning when she was arrested for a misdemeanour offence of being drunk and disorderly alongside her BF Matt Rultler, for the more serious offence of DUI. The LA Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said of the arrests:

“She was arrested. It was kind of a unique situation as she was not capable of taking care of herself. She was incapacitated. When she got out of the car, she couldn’t stand. We had to help her stand. She didn’t know where she was and she didn’t know her own address. We took her into custody for her own protection.”

E! published Xtina's mug-shot.

I want to point out that once Christina had dried out she was released without charge (her idiot of a boyfriend wasn’t so lucky and still faces charges.) But still, what a STUPID woman.

What makes me laugh is that it isn’t like she couldn’t have afforded a cab. This woman literally has more money than sense. How sad.

I have to admit to being a little disappointed in the pop diva, as I have always admired her talent. No one can deny that the girl can sing, but being able to belt out a tune does not place her above the law. My disappointment lies in the fact that up until now Christina has done pretty well to say she started out a child star, growing up in the public eye. I have to admit that when she brought out the leather chaps I worried for her sanity, aswell as her self respect, but she seemed to pull through more popular than ever. She navigated the minefield of her 20’s without suffering a public breakdown. She grew up, settled down, got married and had a son. And then she hit the big 3-0, let the mid life crisis begin…

I hate to say this Christina coz over the years I’ve kinda liked you but what kind irresponsible MOTHER gets into a car with a drunk at the wheel? You have a child at home who needs your care and you are recklessly gambling with your life. Your 30 years old. Grow the hell up and consider what kind of example your setting to your kid.

Sadly Xtina is just one of many. Who can forget the Britney bat crap crazy breakdown? Two marriages, one annulment, one divorce, two children, a custody battle, various stints in rehab, a handful of misdemeanours, a public head shaving, an attack on paparazzi with an umbrella and the total surrender of control of her life to her father. Not bad for a Mouseketeer.

It's Britney Bitch!

Or Lindsay Lohan? One of the biggest celebrity screw ups of this generation. LiLo spends so much time in the courthouse she might as well move her shiz in and save herself the rent.  She’s been up on so many charges I can’t be bothered to remember them all.

One of many

Paris, Nicole, Mischa? The list is endless. Drinking, drugs and driving offences are all on the rap sheet. Thankfully these girls have gone a ways to getting their act together, Nicole Richie emerging in the best light as a wife and mother. Lets hope they stay on the straight and narrow.

Paris...

Nicole...

Mischa.

But Christ even Disney Channel kid Demi Lavato checked herself into rehab due to an ’emotional breakdown.’ She was 18 at the time. No offence Demi but your young, rich, famous and well looked after, how bad can your ’emotional problems’ be? So what, you got dumped by a JoBro and had a squabble with your equally rich and famous BFF Selena Gomez. It’s called being a teenager. Other teens get through it just fine without a stay in the luxurious Promises Rehab Facility.

Some celebrities abuse the law and abuse themselves and believe they are above reproach. They’re not. Or at least they shouldn’t be. But a quick stay in rehab and an even quicker stint in jail (check out Nicole Richies 84 minute sentence) and everything is right in the world. They get a rap over the knuckles and normal Joe Blogs gets a custodial sentence. Fair?

What annoys me so much is the waste. They have talent (ok, so I don’t actually know what talent Paris, Nicole, Lindsay, or Mischa have to offer but just go with me as I try to make this point.) So they have talent, youth, beauty, endless resources and boundless opportunity, and what do they do? They wee it down the drain. It’s just such a shame. These people got what they wanted. They wanted fame and fortune. To see their name in lights and feel the public adoration. Well like it or not I believe ‘celebrity’ comes with a position of responsibility. The responsibility of being a role model to the fans that put them in the position they so badly wanted. If they don’t want that kind of responsibility then they should give it up and go home to the back and beyond of Louisiana or wherever the hell else they are from.

So to all you train wreck celebs:

If you cant handle the heat then get out of the kitchen. Go home, fade out of public consciousness and take care of yourself and/or your kids. On the flip side, if you really love what you do, clean up, show yourself some respect, show your talent some respect, and show your fans, the people who pay for your life of riley, some respect too. Either way get your act together. You got what you wanted, so find a safe, legal way to deal with it.

Jemm xoxo

P.s, To all the celebs who keep their train firmly fixed to the tracks, I salute you!

Filed under I just had to tell you this

I ♥ Celebrities!

Celebrities. You either love ’em or hate ’em. Some can’t get enough of them, others quite frankly wish they would piss right off. I have to admit to falling into the previous category. I love ’em and can’t get enough of ’em.

Now I’m not crazy enough to want to be one of them but I am nosy enough to be a journalist (pot, kettle, black?!) so it’s fair to say they pique my curiosity. I’m partial to the odd gossip mag, my fave for years being Heat (I now find it impossible to go to London without changing my status too “I’m going to London… to buy Heat magazine) although some of the other weekly gossips are now just as deliciously scathing. I also confess to being a regular visitor to Heatworld.com and PerezHilton.com where the latest news and gossip is never but a refresh button away. Thanks to Twitter (and to celebs not being able to resist yet another avenue to display themselves to the public) it is now possible to stalk or ‘follow’ famous folk and get constant updates regarding what they’re doing and thinking. Who can resist? Not me.

Due to the copious amount of gossip mag reading, website surfing and Twitter stalking that I undertake all in the name of ‘research’ I like to think that my extensive knowledge of the world of celebrity is second only to that of Perez Hilton, who seems to get where water can’t. Within my circle of friends I am known as the go-too for celebrity news, whatever you need to know, when you need to know it. You can bet you can rely on moi.

Now I know there are some, who hide behind their broadsheet papers and roll their eyes at the mere mention of celebrities, because of course there are far more important things going on in the world. I mean who wants to know if LiLo is going to back to prison for the fifth time? What country Paris Hilton has been booted out of this week on yet another drugs charge? Who wore it best: The Hollywood actress or the British Pop Star? Who’s dating/cheating on who? Who’s star is on the rise and who’s career is on the skids? Who’s got malaria this time? Who wants to know?

Well, me actually.

OF COURSE there are more important things in the world and YES I am aware that the world of celebrity is about as real as The Hills, but as a form of entertainment this stuff is gold. Even the Eastenders scriptwriters couldn’t make up this drama and we all know that show is as far fetched as crap from Cairo. As long as it is taken with a pinch of salt, with the understanding that it’s all just a bit of light hearted fun, I don’t see any harm in being an avid follower of the Celebrity Soap Opera.

Now, professionally and journalistically my interest lies more with the women’s monthly glossies rather than the gossip weeklies as the monthly mags would give me more scope to put my features writer ambitions to use, however if opportunity knocked in the form of a job I definitely wouldn’t slam the door in the face of a weekly.

While I was interning with the features teams at Sugar & Company mags earlier this year I was present and involved while the writers organised interviews, brainstormed questions and researched various stars to include in the magazines. I have to admit that being a part of these tasks made me a teeny tiny bit excited at the thought of all these famous folk, especially when the acting features editor at Company trotted off to interview Christina Aguilera.

So no matter the glossies or the weeklies, if my life plan of becoming a ‘Jazz-handed-magazine-journalist-extraordinaire’ all goes smoothly (fingers crossed!) I will at some point in my career get the opportunity to interview and chat with the odd celeb or two. This got me thinking as to whom, in a professional capacity, I would like to interview if given the chance and I have to confess to being slightly disappointed as to what was on offer. There are not that many celebs at the moment that I would love to meet. Celebsville seems to be a bit thin on the ground where actual real celebs are concerned. Nowadays the term celebrity can be loosely applied to just about anyone if they have done a stint on a reality show or are prepared to turn up to the opening of an envelope.

But, I racked my brains and here are the ones that made the list:

Audrey Hepburn

I know she is dead, I wish she wasn’t. A true icon

J K Rowling

From depressed single mum on benefits to one of the worlds most celebrated authors and one of the richest women in England, all because she had an idea of a boy wizard called Harry Potter while on a delayed train from London to Manchester. Would love to sit her down and ask her about her work and life and where she found the inspiration and determination to change her life, and that of Harry fans the world over, forever.

Peter Kay

What can I say? He’s northern, he’s funny, I him.

Julia Roberts

My favourite actress, loves her movies coz she only makes good ones.

Michael Caine

Legend of an actor and he’s in two of my all time favourite films. The Prestige and A Muppets Christmas Carol. Enough said.

Zac Efron

This one is for my friend Christopher. I promised that if I ever interviewed Zac I would take a picture so that Christopher could replace the one on his Facebook profile of the cardboard cut out Zac for one of the real thing. Known more for his looks than his acting ability I would probably ask about his beauty routine. And lets face it, it doesn’t exactly hurt your eyes to look at him.

And last but certainly by no means least is the starlet that I would most want to meet: Cheryl Cole

The highest honor had to go to Cheryl. You know I heart her. For those that don’t know go back and read my blog entry: ‘The nations Tweedheart’ Interviewing her would be well scary. But I’d do it then die of happiness later.

Even those celebs you love to hate bring some form of entertainment into your life. I defy anyone to pick up a trashy mag and not find at least one person within it’s pages who you can spend a happy couple of hours taking the pee out of. There are countless ‘celebrities’ that I would be happy never to meet here are an example of just a couple.

Katie Price & Kerry Katona

The question I would ask is: “Isn’t it about time you got a proper job?”

Megan Fox

Absolutely nothing against this girl apart from the fact that I seriously doubt my self esteem could handle sitting in the same room as her.

There you have it, my celebrity wish list & my wish I never list.

Taking an interest in the celebrity world is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s glitzy, it’s crazy and it’s a million miles away from our day to day lives. Who can blame you for pressing your nose against the glass to get a better look? I’m sure that everyone at some point has had a celeb that they would love to meet. Following the famous folk is a good bit of harmless fun (unless your a stalker, then your crazier than they are.)

What’s your opinion, are you a celebrity lover or hater? Who would make it onto your wish lists? Get in touch and let me know.

Jemm xoxo
